Chapter Sixteen

LATER MONDAY NIGHT

I am actually grateful to be here.

Callahan climbs out of the peach-colored bathtub in the Twelve Oaks guest suite and rubs her body dry with a warmed towel that looks brand new.

No Lila towels here.

She slips a fine-cotton white nightie over her head, turns out the bathroom lights, and walks across the deep plush of the bedroom carpet to the nearest of the two single beds.

Dinner tonight was the usual mouthwatering Vi fare. Though she seemed put out with Pepper and atypically sharp-tongued, Vi’s mood affected her cooking not at all. Fresh grouper in lemon sauce, wild rice, collard greens, fruit salad, and homemade cloverleaf rolls. All served at a candlelit dining table, plus civilized dinner table conversations with Honey and Pepper, mostly about Harry, his remarkable mind, and his daring escape. The key lime pie was the perfect finale.

And now—oh bliss—Callahan lowers herself onto ironed sheets and fluffy down pillows for one night of safe harbor sleep.

I bet I sleep like a bear cub.

She turns on a bedside lamp, plumps two pillows against the chintz-covered headboard, and takes her latest edition of SC Wildlife from the side table.

A light tap on the bedroom door. It opens and Honey comes in. “Mind if hang out for a few minutes?” She’s wearing polished cotton turquoise pajamas, her blonde hair hanging to her shoulders in ringlets.

She’s such a natural beauty with those sympathetic brown eyes.

“I’m really glad you’re here safe and sound with us, Callahan. Nobody should be alone on this island tonight.” Honey walks to the other bed and sits down on its edge across from her. “What do you make of all that’s been happening?”

“You probably know more about it than I do.” Callahan closes the magazine and sets it back on the table. “I’m pretty much just an observer.”

Honey pushes two peach-fringed decorative pillows behind her own back and props herself against the headboard of the other twin bed, her bare feet on the velveteen duvet comforter. “Well, the latest is that before Robbie Pasquini fell this morning, he left Cole a message asking him to call back because he remembered something he thought might be significant.”

Honey sneezes suddenly, produces a tissue from her PJ pocket, and mops her nose. “Of course, there’s no way to find out what that is now unless he’d already told Irene.” She sneezes again and then again, four more times in a row, her eyes becoming reddened and puffy. “This is so annoying. I never know what’s going to trigger my allergies. Between Francie and me, one of us will always find something to kachoo about.” She blows her nose and lobs the tissue into a nearby wastebasket. “Colonel Mustard, my Persian cat. He was the worst, and I loved him so. Francie says the reason Pepper doesn’t have allergies is they come from our mother’s side, but of course, I’ve had no contact with Ruby, so I wouldn’t know.”

She produces a bottle of pearl-colored fingernail polish from her pajama
